Finding your perfect stylist

I really believe that our hair is our most important accessory. It’s our most invaluable asset that is part of our personal style. Finding a stylist to work with to create the hair that reflects your personal style can sometimes be daunting. Here are a few tips to help you find your perfect stylist.

1. Online Portfolios

We live in the world of technology where you can literally find a stylist’s portfolio through their Instagram or facebook. Does the work you’re seeing reflect the vibe your wanting for your own look? A mistake I often see is that a stylist will only post pictures of their work but don’t deliver any value or show you who they really are. Is the stylist you are researching posting video tutorials or tips and tricks? Are they showing you who they really are with more personal open posts or videos?

2. Reviews

Google, Facebook and Yelp reviews can be such a great tool when searching new salons. Are the reviews new and updated or are they from 4 years ago? What are other people actually saying about the salon and/or stylist?

3. Consultation

Most salons and stylists offer free consultations. A consultation should be booked in advance and usually are around 15 minutes. This is a great way to meet your potential stylist and build some trust before they get their hands on your hair. Bring inspiration photos with you so both you and the stylist are on the same page. It makes it much easier to explain what you mean with a picture in hand. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Great stylists will always be happy to answer any concerns or questions and be forthcoming with what can and can’t be done with your hair.

4. The Experience

If you’ve decided to book a consultation you’ve already been introduced to what kind of experience you’ll have at the salon. Was booking the consultation easy or difficult? If you talked to a receptionist how were you talked to? Was their website easy to navigate? When you came to your consultation appointment how were you greeted? Did you feel welcomed and taken care of? How did the stylist greet you and did you feel like they listened and understood you? All these small details are part of the salon experience.
